About Susa Ventures
ACTIVE: 2014 – present
EMPLOYS: 1,000+ across the group’s portfolio
Established in 2013, San Francisco-based Susa Ventures specializes in seed and early stage venture investments in data focused start ups.
General Partners Eva Ho, Leo Polovets, Chad Byers and Seth Berman, entrepreneurs and former operators themselves, founded the company on the basis of a shared belief that the data revolution is under appreciated, citing health, banking and finance, and education as just some of the fields where opportunities are ripe for data-centric approaches.
Targeting businesses located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and New York, Susa Ventures’ portfolio includes Zephyr Health, Namo Media (subsequently acquired by Twitter), Whisper, and Frontback.
About The Founders
After graduating, Chad spent almost four years at Silver Springs Network, a leading Smart Grid technology provider. He assumed various marketing and product management roles, and eventually led and won a Department of Energy grant to build the world’s first Smart Grid-enabled residential solar inverters.
He then spent a year at Integrate in New York, an advertising/marketing technology startup, as Senior Director of Platform, before stepping away in late 2012 to form Susa Ventures.
While in operating roles, Chad was also an active angel investor, building a portfolio of close to ten companies, and in 2015 he was featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 Class for his work in Venture Capital.
Eva holds an MBA from Cornell and an AB in Biology from Harvard. She is a serial entrepreneur and founder, most recently a founding executive at Factual, a leading location data provider in Los Angeles.
Her previous roles include five years as Senior Product Marketing Manager at Google, head of marketing for Applied Semantics, a company that was sold to Google in 2003, and in 2008, she co-founded Navigating Cancer, a health start up that offers a suite of tools and content empowering cancer patients to navigate their best care. Additional past employers include The Wilkerson Group, Procter & Gamble and IBM.
Eva is a keen supporter of other entrepreneurs, and mentors at WebFWD, Mucker Lab, Common Crawl and newMe Accelerator. She is also very active in the non-profit sector, founding Whole Child LA in 2008, a community pediatric pain clinic, and sits on the board of First Descents and Iridescent.
Former software engineer Leo holds a BS with Honors degree from Caltech, and in 2002 he was one of three members of Caltech’s world finalist ACM International Programming Contest team.
He was the second non-founding engineering at Linkedin, then spent three years working on payment fraud detection at Google. This was followed by four years at Factual, working on large scale-data cleaning and entity resolution, before leaving in late 2012 to start Susa Ventures.
Leo’s new focus on venture capital includes his role as an angel investor in companies including DataFox, Lumoid and Momentum Machines.
Seth graduated from the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business in 2000.
He served as Vice President for The Richemont Group for nine years, responsible for strategic marketing across their brand portfolio, and is a seasoned angel investor whose portfolio extends to over fifty companies, including Nest, Optimizely, Backtype and Hipmunk .
Seth’s previous experience includes launching Formula 1 Racing in the United States, and while in college, as a result of experience growing up as a competitive mogul skier, he started Freeskier, a successful ski magazine that is still in publication today.
