“I wanted to capture the beauty of nature,” said CEO & Chairman of 1 Hotels Barry Sternlicht, referring to the inspiration behind the company’s growing portfolio of eco-luxe properties. And with sites currently in Brooklyn and Manhattan, as well as Miami’s South Beach and Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, the group has just announced its next venture. Slated for a Summer 2020 opening, the 1 Hotels brand is set to debut in Canada, in downtown Toronto.

Like several of its sister sites, the Toronto project will see an existing hotel transformed into a haven for environmentally conscious travellers. The Thompson Toronto on King West Street, which boasts views of the downtown skyline and Lake Ontario, will undergo an extensive program of refurbishment and renovation, which will not only include the installation of familiar brand signatures, but in keeping with 1 Hotels’ philosophy, reflect the area’s local surroundings. So, Canada's natural beauty, the vibrant character of King Street West and the city’s marketplace will all inform the project, and ensure 1 Hotel Toronto is unique.

Known for "bringing the outdoors inside", the brand’s newest property will feature the use of reclaimed wood and stone throughout, including timber, driftwood and local limestone, as well as its so-called living walls, which typically grace the lobby. Hemp-blend Keetsa mattresses, organic cotton sheets, recycled wood room keys and hangars made from 100% post consumer recycled materials are also standard. As are three-times filtered drinking water and chalk boards rather than a pen and paper in each room, plus the use of eco-friendly cleaning products.

The group’s sustainable practices also include a ‘recycle, repurpose and reuse’ approach to waste, energy saving initiatives and a focus on fresh and seasonal food. And connecting with the local community is key, through initiatives such as culinary partnerships and collaborations with local artists and craftsmen.

“We look forward to sharing our mission to inspire conscious consumption with guests from across the globe as well as the local community,” said Sternlicht, speaking about this latest venture. And the award-winning brand is set to expand further, with properties also slated for Nashville, Sunnyvale, Hanalei Bay, Cabo San Lucas, Paris, Haitang Bay, and Melbourne.
