A New Decade: Carmen's Take

We are just starting a brand new decade with so much going on, and it is so important that we remember the positive, despite the many atrocities happening, with vast fires in Australia, floods in Jakarta, earthquakes in Puerto Rico, and the US and Iran on the brink of war.

Let’s focus on the good so that we can face these challenges with the strength and hope that we need. The world today is more awake than it ever was. Thanks to social media, there are very few secrets and we have risen to a new level of consciousness and awareness; we see young people rising to huge challenges, like Greta Thunberg taking on climate change. There is so much hope in the new direction much of humanity is now taking towards new paradigms and awakenings.

It’s true, climate change is looming and threatening us all, after years of unsustainable living habits and consumerism, driven by the greed of corporations and the corruption and incompetence of so many governments. We are all responsible for the disaster of climate change by neglecting our power and not making more conscious choices; but the good news is, we are awake now and together we are powerful, so let’s empower each other.

We can become one united force in reversing climate change, and we will talk and do more about this; but first, let’s forgive ourselves for our mistakes, let’s not point fingers at each other and let’s become beacons of hope to overcome this.

We can start by asking why Trump is starting a war with Iran. Could he truly be this impetuous and ignorant or does he in fact know exactly what he is doing? Whenever a war starts, I ask myself what it is that the government wants to divert our attention from. And more importantly than that, I decided long ago not to be afraid of things I cannot control. I learned to focus on our beautiful earth and on us, as there is nothing we can do about this war.

What we can do is raise our level of consciousness and pay attention to things we can influence positively, like climate change, helping Australia and Indonesia and calling for more sustainable living, like banning plastics in more countries and breaking habits that are hard to break, for the sake of our planet.

We can fight for human rights. We can stand up for women and bring abusive men like Harvey Weinstein to justice for his vile actions. I am a woman and I stand by all women: ‘no’ means ‘no’, and I would love to see all women standing together against men like him, who deserve to be in prison. We can stand up to greed, we can impeach presidents that deserve it, like Trump.

We can heal our planet with our power as consumers. It doesn’t matter how much you donate or who was the first to spread the news, what matters is that you helped and that the word is spreading and you are a part of it. Your dollar is as important as anyone’s and as important as any corporation’s.

“At the beginning of this new decade, one thing is sure: we are all awake! And I believe we are on our way to a better world.”

Don’t ever belittle yourself or what you are capable of. Just try to be a better version of yourself every day, and let’s focus on cleaning up the earth and stopping climate change.

Don’t be afraid of greedy bullies, be they presidents or terrorists. They want us to be afraid and to talk about them. Belittle those people! Planet earth is way more important than any of us and definitely more deserving of your attention.

The Prime Minister of Australia and the like will be taken to court eventually, Trump will be impeached at some point or, worse for him, ignored. He is like an insolent child, desperate for attention at all times. Terrorists will cease to threaten us and men like Weinstein will be put in prison. Bullies will be held accountable, greedy investors will pay for what they have done, and human rights violators and those who have violated global climate laws will answer to their actions. We are coming together to make this happen. Slowly but surely, we are on our way. To each his own karma.

At the beginning of this new decade, one thing is sure: we are all awake! And I believe we are on our way to a better world.
